Case Study: From 0 to 20,000 Followers in Under 5 Months
March 4th / by Sam Poyan / Case Studies
Growing an account from 0 to 20,000 followers in under 5 months.
Sam here,
This case study is from an account our Twitter growth Wizard Harun, started on the 30th of November 2021.
The account name is @MonkPhilosophy, and he started it on the 30th of November 2021. Today, 4th of March of 2022, the account is on a whopping 20,000 follower count and we’re going to launch a product on it soon.
While Harun wrote the tweets and engaged from the account, I worked on the development of the product, and I’d occasionally write a thread or a short tweet.
Once we launch that product, we will give you an updated case study on the product process and sales.
With that being said, let’s dive in.
1. Taking a Look At The Data
When Harun started this account, he wasn't quite expecting it to grow THIS fast. I think he mentioned his goal being around 20,000 followers in June or July.
Because of that he only started to track the analytics since the end of January, when he was at around 4,000 to 5,000 followers.
Already then, the account had some pretty crazy impressions as you can see below:
March is where things got REALLY crazy...
Take a look at the data below.
24 million impressions. 13,000 new followers. If this rate of growth continues, the account will reach 100 thousands of followers this year.
2. Niche
The niche of the account was broad, which made it easier to get a wide reach.
The reason this niche is so effective on social media is that tweets don’t necessarily go viral for the value they provide.
Instead, the tweets that are most likely to go viral are tweets that most people understand.
The niche Harun chose was Monk Philosophy – making it a sub-niche of the “Wisdom Twitter” community on Twitter.
This niche is proven to work, as you can see by the other tweets below which post similar content.
Note: The tweets below are just examples we selected to show you how popular this niche is. We don’t have any type of connection to the accounts posted below.
2. - Content
For the content, Harun analyzed Tweets of the big accounts that were proven to work.
From there, he pretty much had his own set of templates that he could re-use to make one-liners that would get a lot of engagement.
Here are some examples:
Psychology says, XYZ
XYZ is self care
This is something that I’ve also played around with on my personal account which has been working well too.
I also used these templates when creating content for Chris M. Walker, when we managed his account. We'll analyze his growth in our next case study coming in the next 7 days - where we 20x'd his impressions in two weeks, alongside other pretty cool results like sales/sign ups for his programs.
That said, in comparison to the MonkPhilosphy account, my personal Twitter has quite small. But I’ve still been seeing great growth of 600 followers per month, and 100s of thousands of impressions:
3. Threads
The other key component of the content strategy was writing threads.
Now, why are threads effective?
Because they give Twitter an element of longer-form content, an opportunity to provide more value.
Still, in order to maximize viral potential - Harun mainly stuck to threads that would appeal to a wider audience.
Here are some examples:
Now, these were an important part of the strategy.
Even though they didn’t always get as many likes as the one-liners they often got crazy numbers of followers which grew the account.
Growing The Account
Growing the account was a hustle in the beginning, but it got easier as the account grew.
How did Harun start the account?
He grew the account by leaving value comments on other accounts tweets that had high follower counts. This way, when their followers open the reply, they see his reply and might follow him.
He also built connections via DMs which also helped his engagement, because we of course are more likely to engage with friends.
Once you have a source of engagement, it's much easier to get your tweet suggested to more users through the algorithm/topics.
Topics
Another key component of the strategy was optimizing for Twitter topics.
For some particular terms like “Psychology” twitter has a feature called topics.
The goal of this feature is to suggest popular tweets to users that are interested in them.
Here’s how it works:
Popular tweets are suggested to people who have engaged with the topic previously.
Popular profiles go into the “trending” section of that topic and are heavily suggested to users who engage with the topic.
The topics that Harun optimized for was the "Psychology" topic, and "Mindful Wellness". He did this by using self-care tweets (which go into the Mindful Wellness topic) and Psychology tweets which, of course, go into the Psychology topic.
I’ve also used this process for my own account to get into the “trending” for SEO.
Rinse and Repeat
He didn’t rely on the algorithm to pick up his tweets, he guaranteed it with excellent content, and promoting his account by engaging with other account.
Plus, the niche was an excellent choice, and the branding was superb throughout too - which allowed for a broad reach.
Anyone from Entrepreneurs to groups of college students would relate to many of his tweets, which is why the account blew up.
We will also keep you updated with a case study on how the product sales go, once we’ve launched it this month.
The cool thing about Twitter is that it doesn't just let you make sales and build your list through the platform, but you can also make some valuable connections and build your network there.
As your account grows, you connect with more high-level influencers, CEOs and other individuals, which could skyrocket your business.
All of this while the sales quickly add up, and eventually cover the cost of someone managing the account.
And more often than not, that time frame is a lot shorter than expected... For example, in just one and a half weeks of the account we managed for Chris M. Walker he already started seeing sales and a huge increase in impressions.
Meaning: If you know the audience and have a product that fits their needs, you can earn quite a high $avg per follower. Of course, the key to this is growing an email list too.
